The People Who Love You Might Be Holding You Back

Some of the worst advice you will ever receive comes from people who genuinely care about you. That sounds harsh, but it is true. The people closest to you often want one thing above everything else: They want you safe.

Safe from embarrassment.

Safe from disappointment.

Safe from failure.

That sounds supportive, but safety and success do not always travel together. When you decide to change careers, start something new, rebuild your health, write the book, launch the business, or chase the goal you abandoned years ago, you may hear:

“Are you sure?”

“Why take the risk?”

“You have a good thing going.”

“Maybe you should be realistic.”

Those comments may come from love, but impact matters more than intention. Many people are not evaluating your potential. They are evaluating your risk through their own fears. That does not make them bad people. It makes them the wrong advisors.

You would not ask someone who has never invested money to manage your portfolio. You would not ask someone who never ran a company to fix your business strategy, so why ask people who gave up on their dreams whether you should pursue yours?

Protect relationships, but choose advisors carefully. Find people who challenge you. People who have done difficult things. People who understand that growth requires discomfort. Your environment influences your expectations.

Spend enough time around people who have stopped trying, and standing still starts feeling normal. Spend time around people who are building, learning, and improving, and progress starts to feel possible.

You do not need everyone to understand your next chapter. You need the right people supporting it. Sometimes, clearing the path to progress means removing the wrong voices from the decision-making process. Your future deserves better than advice built from someone else’s fear.
